Personality:
The murder of Naoto’s entire family left him with irreparable trauma, thanks to the culprit of the attack being his sister. To cope, he ended up blocking out everything related to the event, even forgetting about his sister for a time, knowing he wouldn’t be able to move on if he didn’t. Even with blocking it out, that trauma had a lasting impact on his outlook on life: for those who are unable to live, he will live for them, and live as normal a life as possible. Thanks to his aunt taking him in as her own and letting him live in an apartment she owned almost rent free helped him achieve that.

Because of his difficult childhood, Naoto is a very rough person, having a tendency to answer questions very bluntly, even if it annoys a person. He only had his cousin to talk to for most of his life, and because of that he never really found a need to change how he speaks to others. He can be especially rough if someone manages to push his buttons, which tends to be very easy as he has a short fuse. He refuses to show people like Rachel Alucard and Es any respect for them as they essentially berated him for not knowing enough, or not understanding what they say to him. It really isn’t his fault, as the girls he meets more often than not speak rather cryptically, never directly.

He has a large problem around crowds, as it’s stated that he would walk the 30 minutes it took to get to school rather than to take the bus that took him to school in less than 10 to avoid any crowds. It stems from his trauma of losing his family at a young age, but because he has suppressed the memories for so long, he just registers it as claustrophobia. It takes him a couple moments to even approach Celica when he arrives at the Blazblue timeline with nothing but the clothes on his back. This also applies to conflict, as he’s always looking to solve things with words rather than action, needing time to think things through before deciding a fight is necessary, something that is never really given to him. People like Valkenhayn and Hakumen directly attack him, and despite all his cries, is never given a chance and is forced to defend himself. He still manages to leave with his life, which is better than nothing.

He can also show a calm, mature side to himself when put in the right situation, shown by how well he can speak to people like Celica A. Mercury, who only treated him with kindness when Naoto was trying to get his bearings. He even speaks civilly towards Clavis Alucard, even though he has shown Naoto no reason to do so. I mean, could you really forgive someone for cutting off your arm after just getting it back? He can also be very intuitive and knowledgeable, especially when it pertains to his goals. He was able to gain information about the world he was in, no matter how small, from Valkenhayn, even though it was clear he wouldn’t talk. Others have commended him for understanding quickly, especially Nine, who shows slight surprise at his knowledge.

He tends to be a more socially oriented person, making fast friends with anyone who treats him with a semblance of decency. He never really lands in a favorable situation, however. He’s been attacked out of nowhere by assassins, thrown into a world not too different from a visual novel (that’s gag reels for you), and has gotten himself into problems with Makoto for landing on her wrong. He’s even been forced out of help by Kokonoe’s one-track mind (she was more interested in his measurements), leaving him to talk more to himself rather than to another person. His more wilder, almost socially awkward nature shows because of this.

Naoto has an honest, genuine nature despite his harsh words, as he might complain a lot, but he finds himself promising to help Raquel find the Azure, and to find her once more. This honesty also comes out as odd commentary about anything related to his situation, and about “numbers” related to the Eye of the Hunter. Naoto often has to brush off the number talk as random babble, which often backfires, with people like Jin calling him suspicious. He never really gets out of it without a hit to his character.

The honesty he carries compliments his sense of justice very well, as he’s willing to help anyone in trouble, no matter how small it is. His encounters with Nu and Lambda have him realize that the girls were nothing but dolls being used by others for their own goals. To him, the girls reminded him of Kiiro, a woman who felt immense guilt over being created from the remains of her own sisters. He mentions this to Ragna before being teleported out of the main Blazblue timeline. His only request to Ragna after saving him was to make sure the android girls were treated with respect, as if they were human and not simply an object.

He would do anything to protect the people he cares for, easily losing himself to rage when it does happen. Being tipped off by one of the teacher’s other victims that his cousin Haruka was his next target, he rushes over and threatens to murder him for even attempting it. He even shows this same anger towards Es when it came to Makoto’s loss against the girl, even though Es rightfully points out that they only knew each other for a few hours. Naoto realizes this, yet doesn't let up his assault until Es herself starts to fade out of existence.

It also reflects his recklessness, even dying several times protecting those he cares about, but with Raquel’s life-force backing him up, he can be as reckless as he wants and not pay the consequences. When he tried to save Raquel from being consumed by Spinner Superior, he lost his left arm and right leg in the fight, but still fought to protect her. He got them back with the help of one Relius Clover, but with some major waterworks from Haruka and a private hug from Raquel.

He carries a determination to see things through, no matter what happens. When faced with the end of “possibility” in the Blazblue timeline, as Ragna the Bloodedge was close to losing control and turning into the Black Beast, a being who destroyed the world 100 years prior, Naoto remembered Raquel’s begging to “save possibility” and took action as quickly as he could. Naoto knew he was outclassed, and could have very well died in the fight, and yet tried his best to “save possibility”. It paid off in the end, as Ragna broke free from the haze his rage had given him, and he managed to save his own head from getting bitten off. Even after finding Raquel once more after saving “possibility”, he still wants to find the Azure, because it would supposedly stop his transformation into a vampire and return to being human, as that is something he still desperately wants.

Naoto’s a treat.
